Installing MikTeX or TeX Live, TeXnicCenter, and TeXaide on Windows

The following instructions will help you in downloading and installing a user-friendly interface for writing documents in LaTeX. All these programs may be freely downloaded, used, and redistributed to others.

MiKTeX and TeX Live are full-featured LaTeX distributions for Windows, and you only need one of them installed. TeXnicCenter is a graphical front-end for MiKTeX that provides an integrated development environment. TeX Live and TeXnicCenter are already installed in all CAE-managed facilities. ITS labs may have them installed later.

MiKTeX

If you're installing MiKTeX at home, you may want to get a copy of the Windows LaTeX DVD (including MiKTeX and TeXnicCenter) from Mike Renfro or Joel Seber to avoid long downloads. If you're installing MiKTeX in your office on campus, download the MiKTeX installer to your local hard drive.

After downloading the installer, double-click its icon to run it. When prompted:

  • Check the box labeled "I accept the MiKTeX copying conditions" and click Next.
  • Click the "Download MiKTeX" button and click Next.
  • Select the "Basic MiKTeX" option, and click Next.
  • When a list of mirror sites for downloading MiKTeX appears, select the one labeled "USA ibiblio.org" and click Next.
  • Accept the default download directory and click Next.
  • Click the Start button to begin downloading.
  • After the download has finished, click the Next button and the Close button.

Re-run the MikTeX setup program. When prompted:

  • Check the box labeled "I accept the MiKTeX copying conditions" and click Next.
  • Click the "Install MiKTeX" button and click Next.
  • Select the "Basic MiKTeX" option, and click Next.
  • Select the "Install for Anyone" option, and click Next.
  • Accept the default installation source directory and click Next.
  • Accept the default installation target directory and click Next.
  • Select "Letter" as the default paper size and click Next.
  • Click the Start button to begin installing.
  • Once the installer has finished, click Next and Close.

TeX Live

If you're installing TeX Live at home, you may want to get a copy of the Windows LaTeX DVD (including TeX Live and TeXnicCenter) from Mike Renfro or Joel Seber to avoid long downloads. If you're installing TeX Live in your office on campus, download the TeX Live installer to your local hard drive, unzip it, and double-click install-tl.bat to install.

TeXnicCenter

TeXnicCenter is available on the CAE Lab FTP server. Download it and double-click its installer. Use a Typical install when prompted; all the other defaults should be fine. When first running TeXnicCenter, tell the configuration wizard to configure for use with MikTeX. The other default settings should be fine.
